Chandni Chowk to China proscribed in Nepal

Friday, January 23, 2009

Authorities in Nepal have proscribed Akshay Kumar's Chandni Chowk to China. The Himalayan kingdom has banned the film as it claims that Buddha was born in India and not in Nepal as is commonly perceived.Indo-Nepal relations have of late become very shaky. With the onset of Maoists in Nepal and the frenzy of nationalism that has enveloped this small nation, such small incidents may take dangerous shape.

Relations between India and Nepal have been shaped by long-standing geographical, historical, cultural, social and economic ties that the peoples of the two countries have shared with each other in all walks of life. An open border of more than 1,800 km epitomizes this special relationship which also manifests in the close and friendly relations at the governmental level, reinforced by cooperation and regular consultations, notwithstanding political changes.

Under the India-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950, both governments have undertaken, in token of the neighbourly friendship between India and Nepal, to give to the nationals of the other national treatment in its territory with regard to participation in industrial and economic development and to the grant of concessions and contracts relating to such development. The nationals of India and Nepal are also granted, on a reciprocal basis, in the territories of the other the same privileges in the matter of residence, ownership of property, participation in trade and commerce, movement and other privileges of a similar nature. This Treaty has enabled Nepal and Nepalese to be 'land-linked' with India, rather than land-locked, and facilitated sharing of opportunities in pursuit of peace and progress.

Two demonstrations had already been organized when the authorities decided to ban the film. Nepali film censorship authorities had removed the controversial scene from "Chandni Chowk to China," but many had already seen the unedited version on illegal CDs/DVDs smuggled across the porous border with India.
