Hair-raising comedy

Chandni Chowk To China offers a million laughs. With a stellar cast ~ Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty and Ranvir Shorey ~ this could turn out to be a hit. Let’s hear it from Ranvir Shorey.

First, your role in the film.
I play Chopstick! In the film, I am an Indian-Chinese conman from Chandni Chowk. He is a trickster in the garb of an astrologer, a ‘half’ Feng Shui expert and ‘half’ vastu sashtra specialist. My natural looks helped me get under the skin of the character.

How did you prepare for the film?
We had two or three test make-up sessions during which we tried hairstyles that reflect the looks of a kung-fu expert. Besides the bun on my head, I had to sport a moustache and beard that Chinese people like. Then came the Indian kurta-pajama sets.
Choosing the skin tone took time, making the sessions a tedious process. Next we had difficulty shooting in temperatures ranging between minus four and 40 degrees. At high temperatures it was difficult to wear wigs and when it was cold, the hairpiece ‘contracted’.

This is your second film with Akshay Kumar.
Akshay and I get along very well, perhaps because we both are from the north and we have a naughty streak. He’s a funny guy, very focused and disciplined, far more experienced... and a great guy to hang out with. It’s good to work with someone one can learn from.
How was it working with Nikhil Advani (director)?
I always say that Nikhil is a sensible man. It’s immaterial whether he makes a mainstream or alternative film, for I would like to be a part of all his projects. On the sets he was well prepared and elaborated on our roles quite efficiently. Besides, he has strong communication skills.

How was it working with Deepika Padukone?
Deepika is sweet, talented girl. She achieved great success with her first film. Also, she is polite and level-headed.

The soundtrack.
Music plays an important role and I like catchy tunes. The videos are on an extravagant scale and my favourite is the title track. Then there is Bappi Lahiri’s rehashed version of Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, which we have changed to India Se Aaya Mera Dost ~ adding a nostalgic note. The song rendered by Askhay came out well.

Funny moments…
We have shot this film in different places and over a period of time ~ Mumbai to Delhi to Beijing, Shanghai to Bangkok. It was a joyride. But all good things come to an end.
